Just read your column on my grandfather, Thomas Anderson. Lewis Seale recently sent me a copy of the war letters. Sadly, he died before i was old enough to spend any time with him. I know him through these letters and the stories told to me over the years by my mother, Betty Anderson. According to our family historian, Joan Phillips.... In the printed form that I have at hand there are two errors – first Tom wasn’t born in the house that still stands at the corner of Kells and pioneer Road, but rather in the previous home – a log dwelling, where all of Henry and Essie’s children were born – secondly the reference to Tom being a business partner of Major Tom Kelly is incorrect – the Tom Anderson who was the partner of Major Kelly was this Tom’s Uncle Tom, and Lewis’s Grandfather, known to me as “Uncle Tommy”! Lewis is informing Doug Mackey of these corrections.

Dear Doug,I wonder if you can provide any details on the progress of the new book,The Kiosk Story. In 1964, I was hired as a newly graduated teacher by the P.S.S.#2 Pentland Board. I have very fond memories of the town and the families that lived there.I probably learned more about "teaching" in that environment than I did in any Professional Development Program. Having grown up in the flat countryside of Essex County, the impact of the town of Kiosk and Algonquin Park shaped a lot of my interests for Natural Science and Outdoor Education as a teacher. Some of people quoted in the book, The Fossmill Story, made a big impression on me and helped me understand how hard work and self-reliance are two of the best lessons to learn. I could have listened to Ila Legace's mother ("Ma Mere")and her father forever.I spent two years in Kiosk and really regretted leaving. The only things that I found difficult were the Black Flies (Essex County has huge mosquitos but they can't compare to my encounters with Black Flies!) and the 500 miles away from my family. As a "green" teacher, my time in Kiosk was most educational. Two years ago, I made the trip from my Huntsville area cottage to have a look at what remained of the town. The sheer emptiness of what I found was unreal. I can only imagine how the people who built the town and lived there for so long feel when they return. For me, it was as though part of my life had been a figment of imagination - how do the former residents deal with it! I understand that there are Kiosk Reunions, and although I lived there such a short time, I would dearly love to attend the next one. Any information about the book and a Reunion would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Val Taylor

Hello,

I was fascinated with the information I came across on your website, re: Gordon William Anthony Troke --- my father. A couple of inaccuracies I noticed which might help anyone who is doing an historical account of WWII aces. I guess the first one is that he flew in WWII, not WWI. Second, he was 36 years old at the time of the accident -- born June 1916 and the crash was in June 1952. The reason I remember this age, is because all my life I wondered if I'd ever reach that same age of 36. Thirdly, Our family moved to North Bay in April of 1952 from Wolfville, N.S. and therefore the crash was not on January 24,1952. Fourthly, my mother,Eleanore, my brother, Michael and myself did not travel to the crash site 10 years after the incident. I have never travelled there, not saying that I haven't ever considered it. I hope these facts help you and your readers. Any other questions don't hesitate contacting me. Thanks Ron

Note: We have made corrections to the column as it appears on our site. Thanks for the corrections Ron

I really enjoyed reading the material presented on Eddie. Today, I work as a volunteer, at Kingston Pen doing the Pre Release Program for inmates returning to society. Every person who leaves KP goes through my hands in the form of an interview process, to assist them in getting information they need to meet the challenge of returning to the outside. I am especially interested in the bank robber. I try to classify, and analyze the make ups of all persons convicted of this offence. Not all bank robbers do it the same way. Eddie, did it for the money, he said. Eddie sounded like he enjoyed the game as well. Many today say there's a rush you get the moment you step inside the doors of the bank, "it's showtime". I expect to do public speaking this year as a Citizens Advisory member connected to Corrections Canada. My main subject will be on the pre release program I alone do at Kingston Pen.

Regards,

Grant Mitchell

Your articles are a great source of information and inspiration. I am researching local (Ottawa Valley Railways), and many of your articles (and books) contain gems of information not found elsewhere. One area of interest that I cannot seem to find any information about is the McCauley Central RR (logging short line) which JR Booth built and linked to the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound RR which ran through southern Algonqun Park. Does anybody out there have any info on the McCauley Central?

Mr. Mackey, I purchased a copy of Sons of the Pioneers for my dad as a Christmas present. His brother Leo Quevillon was a paratrooper in the Algonquin Regiment in WWII and was killed in France. There had always been a great deal of mystery over the circumstances of his death. My dad has kept his medals and photos framed on the wall and often talks about his older brother. Imagine his surprise to read an anecdote about Leo's death in the book, told by one of his fellow soldiers. My dad finally has some sense of closure and I have ordered two more copies of the book, for his sister and my brother. I was hoping you would be so kind as to pass along my thanks to Mr. Macfie for writing such a vivid history of the regiment and for providing my dad with the facts of his brother's death.

My grandfather, Walter James Parker was a member of the 23rd Militia Reg. in Powassan. Love to know a little more.

But - I have lived in Alberta since 1959. While living in Ashmont Alberta I met a woman about my age - just as a friend. We were working together one day and she had odd mannerisms. I could not notice how the mannerisms were like those I had seen in the Parker family - my mother's family who, when I knew my Grandmother, lived down at Berriedale. I told the lady - "Hell, if I didn't know different I'd say you were from Powassan by the way you talk."

"I was born here!" She said, "But my father was born and raised in Powassan." His family name was Lyttle I beleive.

Glad to run across your page. I still have an Uncle - Don Parker in Sundridge and my Grandmother's brother, Amos North, is still going strong at 86 out at Dunnchurch.

You can't imagine how thrilled I was to run across your internet pages. Many thanks

Richard Dowson (Grandson of Walter James Parker and Clara 'North' Parker) Edmonton, Albera

My maternal uncle is PFC Ray Perry UE of St. Catharines, also a POW held under similar conditions. He wouldn't talk for many years and still retains vestiges of pains from his POW days. It took his granddaughter asking him to come to school to tell her classmates that WWII and Hitler really did exist. even now he polishes his medals, shoes and dons his legion jacket to continue to tell Canadian children of his Algonquin experiences.

As a child in 1945-8 I and my family lived with my great grandmother, Isadora Thurston Smith; her husband was Arthur J. Smith. We lived in what I thought was a big house then on a corner. It had a big front porch, back buildings and windmill. When my great grandmother died in about 1949/50 I was never taken back to the house, although my mother was to have been given some of "Gram's" things. I was 9-10 years old then. Ive always wanted to go back and see the house I loved so much. but have been told it was moved to Bickelton. Is that true?

My mother was Dorothy Allison. She as a child lived in the small house next to Gram's home.

I'm at present working on an autobiographical manuscript left by my wife's grandfather John Tate after his death in 1941. Between 1905 and 1930 he lived in Canada, entering the priesthood at Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island, and later becoming vicar of Thessalon. Previously he had had numerous short term jobs, including a period from the end of November 1905 when he helped to survey a proposed railway from Sturgeon Falls to the Georgian Bay, a distance of 60 miles. The surveyors were Demorest and Stull of Sudbury. We can find no evidence that this line was ever built. Do you perhaps have any information relating to it? Any help will be much appreciated.

I am a new scrapbooker. I wanted to do something to honor all my family that served in any of the military services. As I thought about it, I realized how many had served and died for our country. And than I decided that Policemen, firemen , red cross workers etc. had all served. So know I decided to use the oldest of each part of my family to help with gathering pictures and who served for me. And any information they could help me with. I sent a group of questions for each to answer. And than I would be able to write about each person in a wonderful way. I wrote each one a letter that was exactly the same it read-

I'm doing a scrapbook about all the members that were in any part of the service. I know that you were in and your brother Danny . I don't know if any one else was. Could you put some picture's together for me? And also answer some questions for me. That will help me to put a story with each of the pictures. And if you can tell me something about each of the photo's that you send to me. That would really be great. Here are some questions I would like you to write about, and if you can get your brother Danny to do the same, I would really appreciate it. 1- Service you were in, or are still in? 2- Why did you join that particular service? 3- The date you went in? 4- The date you got out? 5-Why did you get out of the service? 6- What was your job, while you were in the service? 7-Did you like the job that you were doing in the service? 8- Was the job you were doing , the first choice on your list? 9-What was the most exciting thing that happened to you , while you were in the service? 10- What was the saddest thing that happened to you , while in the service? 11- Did you do any active war type duty while in the service? 12-I would like for you to answer all my questions, the best you can, and as truthful as you can? 13- Please write anything else that may come to mind that would help to make the story of our family service people interesting to all of us? 14- If you can add anything that i have not asked you ,please just add it in. O.K.

To make this interesting I'm writing who comes back with there information first and so on down to last. My brother Tommy has answered all the questions , plus in each letter I receive from him , he remembers more each time. So his information is what will get this started. So please hurry and send your info. And I'm Thanking you all right now. I think I'll be quite busy later on. Thanks again Rose Formhals

Hi Doug & Paul

Just a note to express my appreciation for the interesting articles you have written in the Community Voices and for the wonderful books you have published. Apart from the important Heritage value, there is great nostalgic value for many of us who lived through the depression, experienced the old 'logging days' and resided in some of the once thriving villages which are now ghost towns. Some cherished memories have faded with time but your well researched and meticulously documented articles bring back fond memories of yesteryear that we can enjoy all over again. Your article on plane crashes was particularly enjoyable for some former residents of Kiosk who recently re-visited one of the sites. Our first visit was some 50 years ago, the day after the crash near Guillemette Lake. The book you published on "The Fossmill Story" has brought much enjoyment to former residents and their families. Your timely research and collection of oral histories, photos and film captured valuable information that would have been lost with the passing of some of the remaining original residents. It was fitting that your good work was recognized by The Ontario Historical Society which presented you with an award for the "Best Book On Ontario Regional History". We now look forward to your next book -- The Kiosk Story...

Regards, Patch

I am a troop mate of your brother Richard of White Rock and Paul Bourdon of North Bay. Paul mentioned your trip to his place in North Bay and sent along your web site address. I would be interested in reading more material relating to the findings on Paul's property. We lucky enough to get a tour of the spread.

Am Old Troop Mate of Dick's and Pauls and find this site and the articles very interesting, too bad we didn't have someone like you doing the same thing here in Kamloops, B.C., I spend a lot of time at the Museum here researching old sites that I can work with my Metal Detector, waiting for low water and the fall to test new detector. Good Luck.

Very interesting, perhaps a list of the earlier settlers would be nice some time. A person may see his or her family name, make the tie and perhaps even send some forgotten information, photo or what ever. I know my grandfather was one of the earlier settlers of the area and some of my family still reside in the area and in the home stead. Thanks nice site--Hugh Lawrence

Hello from Kitchener. What an interesting site! My reason for landing on your site is that my Grandparents lived and Grandfather worked at Brule Lake, in about 1910-1915.Ihave an Uncle John Quait ,[still living in Pembroke ] born 1913 at Brule Lake. As a child I remember my Father ,going into the bush ,with a lumber company, He would be gone all winter. Is there any way I could find out the name of the company that lumbered at Brule Lake? In the future you can trust that I will be visiting your site regularly...Roberta

Hello Doug, Just finished catching up on your last 20 entries. What a prolific writer you have become! The stories get better and better with the passing of time. Well-researched - well written. The article on the new hospital was an eye-opener after the great effort that went into establishing a new hospital in that same location some years ago went sour. Keep up the good work as long as you are able to. Helen & Hugh Timmerman.

My daughter in New Zealand latched onto this article and forwarded it to me. My son-in-law's best friend is a Staniforth and perhaps this is how they came across this. Anyway, are all of your articles stored in some website? My father-in-law was a bush walker/timber cruise or bush forman with Smiths. Harold Bush was a good family friend. Used to play on the paddles of the Woodchuck in the off season, using our bodyweight to turn them. To sneak onto the Seagull II and dive off the upper deck was also great sport. The Smiths ( Chris, Jaffrey) had a personal launch, the Jingo and many happy trips were aboard it. Great memories, thanks

We really enjoy your stories and look forward to the next one. My ancestors are from the South River area way back in the late 1800's. We made a trip up there last year and info from your columns was very helpful in our research. Thanks for interesting reading and keep up the good work. Carol
